Chickerell Steam & Vintage Show...
There are three things the Portland Steam & Vintage Show is not. First, it is not the Great Dorset Steam Fair, but nobody ever said it was, and secondly, it is not held on Portland anymore, although it used to be. Which is how it got its name in the first place.
But thirdly, it’s not called the “Portland” Show any more! As of 2013 it will be the “Chickerell Steam and Vintage Show”. But for everything the Show is not, there are a loads of other things that it is. It is, for example, certainly a great day out, or two for those who want the extra day. And there is certainly plenty to see. There are steam engines doing what steam engines do, sawing logs or chugging around. And masses of other vintage tractors and vehicles. Vintage and classic car buffs will be in seventh heaven with more shiny chrome and paintwork on display than you can comfortably shake your chamois at. Ditto the display of vintage motorcycles and commercial vehicles. All come together with a few trade stands and a central ring programme to make an interesting and exciting day out for anyone. The 2010 Show was the last to be held at the Southwell Business Park on Portland - for now at least. And for 2011 the Show moved to a new home at Moor Farm, Knights in the Bottom, Chickerell, which is far more Weymouth than Portland, but hopefully Portland’s loss will be Chickerell’s gain and punters and exhibitors find the new venue, which is just off the B3157, provides an equally good or better site for their annual vintage vehicle jamboree. The new show-ground at Moor Farm is a comfortable walk from several of Dorset’s best loved camping parks, including Bagwell Farm Touring Park, West Fleet Holiday Farm and Sea Barn Farm. The first show to be held at this new site was in 2011 and was expected to be returning in 2012 on the weekend of 14 and 15 July. Unfortunately due to the record breaking wetness of the Summer of 2012, the event had to be cancelled the week before it was due to take place. So, from 2013 the Show, has been renamed as the Chickerell Steam and Vintage Show! For full details of forthcoming shows, go to the Chickerell Steam and Vintage Show’s own website. |
