Fishing and camping go together. And why wouldn’t they?
Ever since humans have roamed the Earth they’ve turned to the sea, rivers and lakes
to find food and made encampments close to where they’ve landed their catch.
With fishing and camping virtually embedded in our DNA, it’s no wonder that people
who like camping often like to fish and people who like fishing also like to camp.
Where better to do both than Dorset. Here you’ll find a full range of fishing opportunities
from beaches and piers to rivers, lakes and charter boats.
You’ll also find something for absolute beginners and seasoned veterans of rod and
line.
Organised trips are a great first step for those who’ve never fished before and want
to see if they like it before investing in rods, lines and all the rest of the tackle.
Mackerel fishing trips from Weymouth, West Bay and other harbours along the Jurassic
Coast have been a mainstay of the tourist trade for decades. And they’re still great
value today. Turn up on the harbour side during the main holidays and you’ll find
licensed boats specialising in taking you and your kids out for an hour or so to
catch fish. Whilst there are no guarantees, chances are that’s exactly what you’ll
do. More trips than not you’ll come back with fish for your tea and on some, you’ll
find that the fish just keep on coming!
And when it comes down to it, especially for kids and younger teens, its not so much
the “fishing” they are interested in, as actually catching fish!
The “catching” makes these mackerel boats just the thing for getting youngsters hooked
on how much fun it can be to dangle a line into the water and pull out a fish. But
even if you’re unlucky enough to catch nothing, you will at least have had a great
boat ride and an unrivalled view of the Dorset coast!
If you already have your own tackle or want to spend out on buying some you can,
of course, fish in the sea for free! Chesil Beach is a big draw to beach casters
looking for mackerel and other species.
The piers at Weymouth and Swanage, and the harbour walls at West Bay and Lyme Regis
are also popular fishing spots. These are also the places for those who want to take
their fishing to greater depths to charter boats for day trips, night fishing and
longer adventures.
Those who prefer their water without salt, can find a wealth of fishing lakes and
streams in land. But don’t forget you’ll need a licence and/or to pay any fees due.
So, whether you just want somewhere to entertain the kids for a couple of hours or
you are already serious about the fun of fishing, Dorset has plenty to offer you.
