Farmer Palmer’s...

Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park is holiday heaven for under-8s and their parents.

Set-up with young families in mind, this farm attraction mixes fun, fascination and fresh air.

The fun comes from things to bounce on, ride on, climb on, slide down and play with.

The fascination comes from the natural curiosity kids have for anything furry, feathery or farmy.

And the fresh air? Well that comes from the real outdoor location in which Farmer Palmer’s is set.

The result is a great day out for you and the kids! There’s no hi-tech wizardry, but lots of farm-based fun.

When you’re eight years old or less the delight you get from a large area of smooth tarmac and a massive fleet of pedal tractors cannot be overstated! Add indoor and outdoor bouncy castles (or in this case a bouncy pig and a bouncy cow) sizeable outdoor play and indoor soft-play areas and that alone will keep you and the kids grinning for hours.

But there’s much more.

Asthmatics and hay-fever sufferers may want to skip the “straw mountain” (or at least take an anti-histamine before you go) but others will have “stacks” of fun clambering through this barn full of slides and bales.

There’s also a cracking pedal-car go-cart circuit that’s a real hit with kids and parents alike. What’s not to enjoy about getting behind the wheel and pedaling like fury around a proper tarmac circuit. “Hey look I’m Jenson Button!” (and that’s just the parents!)

But there’s far more to Farmer Palmer’s than just frivolous enjoyment. There’s interactive and educational stuff to do with animals too.

A whole barn is set aside for getting close to goats, sheep, pigs, cows, guinea pigs, rabbits and other creatures great and small.  And whilst it’s lots of fun to just wander around and stroke and watch the animals, there is also a comprehensive programme of events throughout the day so that you can learn about and feed the animals or watch cows being milked.

For young children especially, there’s something truly wonderful about being able to bottle feed lambs or goats or to sit and stroke a guinea pig on your lap.

And then there’s the pig racing!...Pick your pig and see which one reaches the trough first! Only MPs on their way to their expense accounts move faster!

If you fancy getting away from the main part of the farm, you can strike out on foot for a scenic woodland and riverside walk or, for an extra £1 per person, you can take a 10 minute ride on a tractor and trailer. If you’ve never done it before (and few kids have these days) its a must!

To the extent that there’s any downside to Farmer Palmer’s, it is that it is probably best enjoyed in reasonable weather. Whilst there’s plenty to do inside, including a modern and well-appointed café next to the soft play area, some of the best bits and the bits that make it different from other attractions are outside. This makes it an excellent place to go in fair weather or on cool or showery days when you might not want to be on the beach.

But on really wet days, whilst you’ll certainly have fun, you probably won’t get quite as much from a visit as you would when the outside activities are accessible without getting rained on - a luxury farmers don’t get!

Farmer Palmer’s is a good value-for-money, well-organised, professional farm day out where you could easily spend all day (10-5.30 peak season).  That will give you plenty of time to enjoy all the programmed activities and get the most out the play areas, but there’s a fair chance that even the most energetic of youngsters will burn themselves out before then.

The problem will be a lack of fuel rather than a lack of interest!

On the plus side, there’s plenty of places for you to sit down and enjoy a drink, snack or meal to top up their tanks and yours and then relax while they burn themselves out all over again!

So if you want a day out in the country that’s just a little bit different and a whole lot of fun, Farmer Palmer’s could be the one!
